I’ve been as skeptical as anyone about the upcoming Watchmen movie. Maybe I’ve been burned too many times, but I just don’t trust Hollywood to make a superhero movie, especially adapting an actual comic book story, without screwing it up. But with that in mind, I have to admit, the footage I’ve seen looks pretty amazing. I really hope it doesn’t turn out to suck.

I’m waiting until after I’ve seen the movie to reread the comic. I don’t want to put myself even more into “compare movie to comic.” Really, the movie should be judged on its own merits.

When I was an undergrad at the University of Iowa, my advisor was Brooks Landon. In his “American Novel Since 1945” course, he always included two graphic novels in the reading, Watchmen and one other. (My final paper for the class was on Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol, which I also presented about in class, arguing that Watchmen was good, but Doom Patrol was better.)
