War, What is It Good For?

This line spoken by Faramir in The Two Towers goes a long way towards expressing my view on soldiers and warfare (and the glorification of both):

…I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend…
